Later today I’m speaking at the White House’s Cyber Security Summit at Stanford. I’ll be participating in a panel with John Holdren, Director, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; Patricia Falcone, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; and Michelle Zatlyn, Co-Founder, CloudFlare. Together we’ll be talking about one of the most important topics every single business in the world is going to be under ever increasing pressure to address: building better security practices.

Here’s why we think this topic is so critical. At Box, we work with an incredibly diverse set of enterprises around the world — from life science and healthcare leaders, to global construction and financial services firms — but regardless of their industry, these organizations are being pushed to drive innovation and agility into their business by leveraging technology. It’s one of the most common conversations we have with CEOs and CIOs. But the very next conversation we have is almost always: how can we do all this securely?

The underlying point is that in today’s world — which only a quick glance at the news reveals to be rife with more and more security threats — the need to be more collaborative and innovative as a company is inextricably linked to having a new comprehensive cyber security strategy. And this is why Box invests disproportionately in capabilities to help enterprise manage, control, and secure their data. Our announcement this week of Box EKM is just a representative example of the innovation we’re driving in this area.

This new reality is also why we’ve decided to participate in important public-private initiatives like today’s White House Summit and also in the forthcoming ISAO (Information Sharing and Analysis Organizations) standards-setting process. As a secure content management and collaboration provider, it’s our responsibility to take a leadership approach to security and to advocate for the kind of partnerships that will best protect our customers over the long term. Box is excited to help in the development of a framework to share critical intelligence among private companies and between the private sector and the government to help ensure the protection of our customers. Further, as stewards of our customers’ data, we are entrusted with their privacy and will never breach that trust by disclosing customer information without their permission.

Looking ahead, we’re energized to help lead all of our customers towards a better understanding and strategy for balancing new ways to work and collaborate with a comprehensive approach to security.
